National GET FIT, Don’t SIT Day!

Tomorrow, Wednesday May 4th, is National Get Fit, Don’t Sit Day!  You may have always known that exercise is good for you, but it’s likely you didn’t know until recently that too much sitting is actually harmful for your health. That’s why the Diabetes Association recommends that everyone, including people with diabetes, limit the amount of time they spend sitting. In fact, they advise getting up and moving at least every 90 minutes!
Here are some ideas below to help you MOVE MORE, and SIT LESS!

– Try to get up and move every 90 minutes if you can!
Some ideas:

  • Go up and down a few flights of stairs every hour
  • Walk the kids to school
  • Do lunges and squats with at home or with some co-workers
  • Head to the fitness center and workout for 30 minutes.
  • Get up once an hour and take a quick walk around your office.
  • Stand up and stretch at your desk.
  • Download the 7 minute workout app and fit in a quick workout before you eat lunch.
  • If you go out for lunch, walk to the restaurant.
  •  If you take public transportation to work, get off one stop earlier and walk the rest of the way to your office.
  •  Use a speaker or mobile phone so you can pace around your office during conference calls.
  •  Try some chair exercises while at your desk.
  •  Fidget (when appropriate!)—tap or wiggle your foot during meetings or while working at your desk.
